Saint Neilos the Hermit says: "Just as the glass must be clean for the person who will drink from it and desire pleasure, in the same way we must care to have our heart clean, cleaner than our body, in order to please God who wants to see it clean."
It is necessary for our heart to be cleansed since it is already dirty with many bad, worldly and demonic deeds, desires, thoughts, and situations.
All people deeply wish for their internal
purity, and as Saint Makarios says, "all people whether they are Jews or Greeks love...purification. They must seek however, to find how, and in what ways the heart can be cleansed." All people today want their heart to be clean. Certain scientists wonder, why do contemporary people have so many detergents in use, so many soaps, shampoos and different products for cleanliness? Are they dirtier in body and clothes than people in the past?
No, the same scientists answer. On the contrary, they are much cleaner than the people in the past, as concerns the body, clothes, and in their homes. Since they feel internally dirty, they feel their heart dirty, and not knowing what the cause actually is, they seek, buy and constantly use detergents, soaps and shampoos and a multitude of perfumes and products to become clean. But the heart cannot be cleansed in these ways.
It is certain that our hearts are not clean. The heart's dirt is deep and extensive. Not one of us is clean, "Who is cleansed from filth? No one", says the Holy Bible. In our heart are innumerable sorts of dirt, and all this dirt has to be removed. It is necessary to throw out anything that is useless and garbage.
